TikTok UGC means user-generated content on TikTok: videos in which people show, discuss or use a product. Ecommerce teams also use the term for commissioned creator videos and AI-assisted ads with a conversational, creator-like presentation. Those sources require different briefs and different claims.
Start by deciding what the buyer needs to learn. A genuine customer's experience, a hands-on product demonstration and a scripted product explanation can all be useful. Choose the source that can honestly support the message, then build the TikTok production and release plan around it.
Separate the source from the style
A handheld camera, informal language and a domestic setting describe a visual style. They do not tell you whether the speaker bought the product, was paid to demonstrate it, or was generated by AI.
| Source | What it can contribute | What the seller needs to establish |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine customer content | A real person's experience | Permission, context and accurate attribution |
| Commissioned creator content | A planned demonstration or honest experience | Product access, agreed scope, rights and disclosures |
| Seller-made content | Reliable access to the product and its details | Clear commercial context and accurate evidence |
| AI-assisted UGC-style creative | Scripted product explanations and creative variations | Accurate representation, appropriate labeling and no invented customer history |
For US endorsements, the FTC says endorsements must be honest and material connections may need clear disclosure. Payment does not entitle a brand to invent the creator's experience. FTC: Endorsement Guides questions and answers.
Choose a TikTok format by the question it answers
| Buying question | Useful format | Essential evidence |
|---|---|---|
| What arrives in the package? | Unboxing | The actual product and included items |
| How does it work? | Demonstration or tutorial | A clear, accurate sequence |
| Will it suit my situation? | Use-case video | Relevant dimensions, configuration or real use |
| Why choose this version? | Comparison | Consistent conditions and accurate differences |
| What was it like to use? | Customer or creator experience | A genuine person who can support that account |
Pick the format after the question. A first-person review is a weak choice when nobody has used the product yet. A straightforward product explanation can answer the immediate question while you arrange a genuine trial.
For a fictional clip-on reading light, a useful first TikTok could show how it attaches to a book and where the light falls. A claim about weeks of battery use requires different evidence. Keep those assignments separate.
Find creators who can demonstrate your specific product
Review examples of a creator's actual work. Look for clear product handling, intelligible narration, a setting that suits the use case, and an ability to explain relevant details. Follower count alone says little about those production skills.
When the deliverable is a file for your brand's account, evaluate production quality and rights for that use. When the campaign also requires a post on the creator's account, investigate audience fit and the agreed posting obligations as well.
Ask practical questions before sending a sample:
- Can the creator use the product safely and show the required action?
- What facts will they need from you?
- Will they supply a file, publish a post, or do both?
- Which edits and revisions are included?
- What organic and paid uses are licensed, for how long and where?
- Who handles the applicable disclosures and authorization?
Commission a focused assignment before committing to a larger campaign. Define how you will evaluate the first delivery and what would justify more work.
Write a brief with one demonstration and several opening options
Here is a fictional TikTok assignment for the reading light:
Buyer: Someone reading in bed who wants to understand the attachment and light position.
Question: How does the clip sit on a paperback?
Required footage: Actual clip opening, attachment to the specified book, adjustment, and the resulting reading view.
Approved statements: Only the verified product features and settings.
Avoid: Unverified battery-life, medical or sleep claims.
CTA: Check the product's dimensions, settings and available versions.
Ask for two openings to the same demonstration:
- “Here is how this clip sits on a paperback.”
- “Before choosing a reading light, look at the clip.”
The variation tests the framing while preserving the useful product explanation. Let a creator use their own natural phrasing, provided the meaning and evidence remain intact.
A worked TikTok script that keeps the product visible
This illustrative 20-second plan is a production target, not a rule for ideal TikTok length.
| Time | Picture | Suggested words | Review question |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3s | Book and light in the same frame | “Before choosing a reading light, look at the clip.” | Is the buying question clear? |
| 3–8s | Show the clip opening and attaching | “This is how it attaches to this paperback.” | Can viewers see the mechanism? |
| 8–14s | Adjust the light and show the reading area | “Adjust it, then check the position on the page.” | Does the actual product perform the shown action? |
| 14–17s | Close detail of the relevant control | “Here is the control on this version.” | Does the control match the listing? |
| 17–20s | Stable product view | “Check the settings and dimensions before choosing.” | Is the next step available? |
If filming reveals a limitation, update the script. Useful product content can explain a trade-off; hiding one can send the wrong customers to the listing.
Prepare the TikTok release package
Keep the final video, description, intended account, product destination, rights record and approval together. Review text on a phone-sized display and watch with sound on and off. The buyer should still understand the action and necessary qualifications.
Confirm commercial music rights. TikTok recommends its Commercial Music Library for brand and product promotion and explains that other music requires the relevant licenses. TikTok: Commercial music use.
If the content contains realistic AI-generated imagery, audio or video, review TikTok's AI-labeling requirements. A disclosure about AI does not make a false customer experience accurate. TikTok: AI-generated content.
For US sponsored endorsements, put the required disclosure where viewers can encounter it in the video. Review the wording and presentation alongside the platform's disclosure controls. FTC: Disclosures 101.

Prepare the release package around the approved demonstration. Original checklist diagram; Spark authorization and campaign setup remain separate advertising tasks.
Plan organic posting and Spark Ads separately
Decide whether the video will be posted to the seller's account, the creator's account or another authorized account. Put that decision in the brief so file delivery and posting obligations are clear.
Spark Ads can use a brand's own organic posts or another creator's posts with authorization. TikTok attributes promoted engagement to the organic post. Confirm the required permission and campaign setup before planning paid use. TikTok: About Spark Ads.
A creator's delivery of a file does not, by itself, establish authorization to boost a post from their account. Track contractual usage rights and platform authorization as separate items.
Review buyer response before expanding the batch
Record each video's source, product, question, opening, account and offer. Then inspect whether viewers reach the explanation, what questions remain and what shopping actions are available to measure.
If viewers repeatedly ask how the clip opens, the demonstration needs a clearer angle. If they understand the product but ask about compatibility, the next video should address compatibility with verified information. If clicks do not lead to purchases, inspect the listing and offer alongside the creative.
Avoid inferring that one creator or AI format always wins from a small set of posts. Compare similar assignments and treat the results as input to the next batch.
